Mackenzie Half Marathon Course

Starting on the Village Green just beside the WW1 Statue, head towards Timaru, past Railway Tce entrance and continue to the concrete culvert, which is on the grass opposite Morah, turning left. Follow Gray St around, passing Mackenzie St, then cross Talbot Rd. Still on Gray St pass Argyll Street until you come to the entrance of the Domain. Turn into the Domain, around the bottom end of the flying fox, past the back of the Ice-Skating Rink and head towards the River Track, turning right.

Down the River Track to O'Connors Lane [extension of Talbot Rd], turn left, head down towards the river.  Slight right, then left bend across the river, you will come to a farm track that will lead you into a paddock. Cross it to exit onto Tondros Rd. Carry on until you get to Spur Rd. Go up Spur Rd for about 2.5 km you will see a picnic table on right continual for about 3.8km. On your left is one farm entrance called ‘The Run’. Only a few 100 metres past that on your right, is a gate into a paddock. Going into that paddock, follow the right-hand fence line and you will come to a deer fenced lane. Locally known as the Bridle Track. Follow the lane down, until you come out again onto Tondros Rd. Short climb up, then back down which will lead you back to a hard right hand corner in the road, where you will turn left back into the paddock which you ran across earlier. Then it’s a case of following the river track back into the Domain. This time turn left into Gray St, cross to turn right into Talbot Rd, crossing so you can come onto the concrete path of the Village Green. Finish just behind the Amphitheatre big bump.

July 18th 2020

WAHOO!!

It is with wild enthusiasm that we can announce that the Inaugural Mackenzie Half marathon /10 km /5.5 km is going ahead on July 18th 2020 in Fairlie!!

What a rollercoaster ride it has been for us all and it is going to take a while before we feel we are back to normal again… whatever we perceive Normal to be. However, we feel it is important to send out an email now to verify the fact that the event is really going ahead.

We have changed the start times of all the races with the hope that it may have warmed up a bit!

The times are as follows:

Half marathon  21.1 km            10:00am ( for those who feel they will be longer than 3 hours)

Half marathon run  21.1 km     10:30 am

River Dip 10km                           11:00 am

Flat Jack 5.5km                           11:15am

Registration will be at the community centre on Friday 17th from 4pm until 8pm. This is directly opposite where the course starts and finishes. Registration will also be available on the day of the race from 8.30am. Race packs and merchandise will be given out at registration.

Prizegiving will be at the community centre at approximately 2.00 pm.

This is obviously going to be held at a MUCH COLDER part of the year than intended so as locals we encourage everyone to wear appropriate gear. There is no compulsory gear but merino gloves, hats and socks are highly recommended. If crossing the river, in 10 km and half marathon, merino socks will not stay cold like cotton running socks. Believe me, it makes all the difference!

Also, a warm baselayer and running jacket are great items to wear as well. We are planning for a beautiful day but you need to be prepared for everything. Also, please have gear to change in immediately after. Don’t forget to bring a change of shoes and socks.

PRIZE…. YES.. For those brave enough .. we have a prize draw for everyone who runs in a kilt!  This is Mackenzie country and this is what our men folk  wear as their daily attire! So join in the tradition.

This draw will take place at prizegiving so you need to be there to have a chance to win.

We will be sending out more emails and updates in the weeks to come but otherwise… go buy those merino socks and get your kilt out of the cupboard!
