The Origins of the Mackenzie Half Marathon: A Community Tradition
The Mackenzie Half Marathon was born from a simple yet inspired idea during a run on the back hills of Fairlie. When John and Yvonne Shaw returned to Fairlie from Nelson—where they had been actively involved with Nelson Athletics—they brought with them a love for the sport and community events. While out on a run one day, Yvonne took to the winding path of Spur Road, envisioning how its rugged hills and scenic views would make an ideal half marathon course. Excited by the idea, she shared it with her husband, John, and they began laying the groundwork for the event.
Determined to keep the race community-centered and non-commercial, John reached out to the Fairlie Lions Club, hoping they might help with initial expenses, marshalling, and other race-day tasks. The Lions embraced the idea, aligning with John and Yvonne’s vision of giving back to Fairlie; all funds raised from the event would go directly into the community through Lions-led initiatives.
The Shaws also enlisted the support of their friends from Nelson Athletics, who traveled to Fairlie on race day to provide professional timing gear and oversee the event’s logistics. This partnership laid a solid foundation, and the Mackenzie Half Marathon soon became a celebrated local event. Year after year, the event grew, attracting more runners and spectators. As it did, the Lions took on a larger role, ultimately managing much of the race. Yet, John, Yvonne, and their daughter, Jasmine, remained integral to its organization, dedicating countless hours to maintain the race’s unique spirit and high standards.
Today, the Mackenzie Half Marathon stands as a testament to the dedication of the Shaws, the Lions, and the community, embodying the values of Fairlie and raising funds that directly support local causes. Each July, runners gather to take on the course, embrace the camaraderie, and contribute to a legacy that has grown from a single run into a cherished annual tradition.
Making a Difference: How Your Participation Supports the Community
As participants in the Mackenzie Half Marathon, you’re not just running for yourselves; you’re contributing to vital community initiatives that make a lasting impact. This year alone, The Fairlie Lions have planted over 4,200 native plants along the river track, which is also the route for the three larger events, enhancing the beauty of the environment you enjoy during the race. With a commitment to sustainability, The Fairlie Lions planted 8,000 native plants last year and plan to plant another 5,000 next year, aiming for a total of 17,000 plants in the coming years.
Your entry fees help support significant causes, including financial contributions to Ronald McDonald House, the Lions Cancer Trust, and the Westpac Helicopter service. Additionally, funds raised go towards supporting the local Medical Centre, Mackenzie College Outdoor Pursuits, and the Fairlie Fire Brigade. There are many more funds dispersed into the community as needs arise, ensuring that your participation directly benefits the Fairlie area.
We invite you to join our community for the day, embrace the spirit of camaraderie, and celebrate the positive impact you're making together. Your presence not only enhances the race atmosphere but also strengthens our collective efforts to support Fairlie and its residents. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing this special experience!
